Aliso Viejo had been an unincorporated community since around 1990, and incorporated as a city in 201 due to the efforts of the Aliso Viejo Cityhood 2000 Committee, which was responsible for introducing an initiative on the ballot for the 2001 special election.

Population Distribution

The 2010 United States Census reported that Aliso Viejo had a population of 47,823. The population density was 6,400.4 people per square mile. The racial make up of Aliso Viejo was 34,437 (72%) White, 967 (2%) African Americans, 151 (0.3%) Native American, 6,996 (14.6%) Asian, 89 (0.2%) Pacific Islander, 2,446 (5.1%) from other races, and 2,737 (5.7%) from two or more races. Geography
Aliso Viejo is located at the southern end of Orange County, California. It is bordered by the cities of Laguna Beach on the west and southwest, Laguna Hills on the east, Laguna Niguel on the southeast, and Laguna Woods on the north. The city is conveniently located less than five miles from the coastal communities and beaches found along the Pacific Ocean.The city has total area of land 7.472 sq mi (19.352 km2), at the elevation 417 ft (127 m).


Climate
The city climate is warm during summer when temperatures tend to be in the 70's and cool during winter when temperatures tend to be in the 50's. The warmest month of the year is August with an average maximum temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while the coldest month of the year is December with an average minimum temperature of 43 degrees Fahrenheit. The annual average precipitation at Aliso Viejo is 14.03 inches. Rainfall in is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. the wettest month of the year is February with an average rainfall of 3.38 inches.
